Get hooked on ice fishing
Kids Can Catch: Free Fishing Fun in Sylvan Lake
Want to try out ice fishing? Get hooked on the sport at Sylvan Lake’s free Kids Can Catch event during Winterfest – a weekend of fun for the whole family.
Join the Alberta Conservation Association (ACA) Kids Can Catch event and learn the basics of ice fishing, February 18 to 19. Volunteers will teach new anglers the proper ways to bait a hook, where to drop a line, and what to do once a fish has been caught. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the weekend.
“Rods are rigged and ready to go while mentors provide participants with tips and tricks. We have all the gear ready,” says Laura Volkman, event co-ordinator for the ACA.
So, bring your sense of adventure and prepare to get hooked on ice fishing. Out on the lake, you will find pre-drilled holes, a cozy ice fishing tent, fishing mentors, snacks, and more. Ice fishing licenses are not required on the Family Day weekend, but Alberta Sportfishing Regulations apply to this event. Visit mywildalberta.com for more information
“Whether you’re an seasoned fisherman or never fished in your entire life, we want you to come and experience the fun of ice fishing,” Volkman said.
Ice fishing is more than drilling a hole in the ice and surviving the cold. In the winter, Sylvan Lake is a popular ice fishing destination with everything from rentals, heated ice fishing shacks to bonfires on the ice. Learn more about Sylvan Lake’s world class ice fishing opportunities here.
“Ice fishing is a unique experience. There aren’t too many places in the world where you can try it out,” Volkman said.
