Sylvan Lake History and Archives

Sylvan Lake, once called Methy, Swan, and Snake Lake, has a rich history shaped by French-speaking settlers from Quebec and the U.S. Summer visitors arrived early on and became a key part of the community, building cabins and enjoying seasonal attractions like regattas and dance halls. Locals petitioned to change the name from "Snake Lake" to "Sylvan," meaning "wooded," to better reflect the area's beauty. Sylvan Lake became a village in 1913 and grew into a town by 1946 with a population of about 900.
