The monster trucks of the cycling world, fat tire bikes are taking winter riding by storm. With oversized tires designed for maximum traction on snow, fat biking opens up a whole new way to explore Sylvan Lake’s snow-covered trails—and even the frozen lake itself!

Why Try Fat Tire Biking?

“Embrace wintertime!” says Seth Fulton, Sales Manager at Mud, Sweat and Gears in Red Deer.

“Fat tire biking is an easy activity to enjoy the snow. You just hop on and ride wherever you want.”

From daytime adventures to magical night rides under twinkling Christmas lights, fat biking offers a unique way to experience winter.

“Fresh snow glimmering in the trees—it’s magic,” Fulton adds.

Where to Ride in Sylvan Lake

With 26 km of interconnected trails, Sylvan Lake is a fat biking paradise. Here are the top spots:

1. Lakefront Cruising

Ride the boardwalk along Lakeshore Drive for stunning sunrise or sunset views. When the ice is safe, venture onto the lake for an unforgettable experience.
Safety Tip: The ice is not monitored by the Town—always check conditions and practice ice safety.

2. CP Trail

A quieter option, the CP Trail runs east to west across town under a tree canopy. It’s fully paved, making it great for beginners, families, and even dogs. Pack a lunch and explore hidden spots off the beaten path.

3. Jarvis Bay Provincial Park

Just five minutes north of town, Jarvis Bay Provincial Park offers wooded trails with peek-a-boo lake views.

4. Make Sylvan Your Basecamp

Book a cozy lakeside hotel or Airbnb and use Sylvan Lake as your base for exploring Red Deer’s 30+ km of trails, including Heritage Ranch and Riverbend Golf & Recreation Area. Rentals are available at the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame.
