Historically, snowshoeing was a vital mode of transportation during Canadian winters. Indigenous Peoples of Canada crafted snowshoes to help travelers float above deep snow – a brilliant innovation that made winter journeys possible. Today, we don’t rely on them for survival, but snowshoeing remains one of the best ways to explore Sylvan Lake’s breathtaking winter scenery.
Why Snowshoeing?
If you can walk, you can snowshoe! It’s lightweight, easy to learn, and surprisingly relaxing. Plus, it’s a fantastic way to stay active during the colder months while enjoying the magic of winter. Sylvan Lake offers a variety of trails, so you can choose an adventure that fits your pace, whether it’s a quick stroll or a full-day trek.
Where to start
On the Lake
Snowshoeing across Sylvan Lake is an unforgettable experience. After a fresh snowfall, the silence and beauty are unmatched as you carve your own path across the ice. Safety tip: Always check ice conditions before venturing out. Pack a lunch and enjoy a picnic on your own private spot in the middle of winter paradise.
Town Trails
Sylvan Lake boasts a 26-kilometre trail network connecting the lakefront to scenic parks. These trails wind through fields, wooded areas, and along the shoreline—perfect for families thanks to gentle slopes and flat terrain.
Jarvis Bay Provincial Park
Just outside town, Jarvis Bay offers over seven kilometers of ungroomed trails through snow-laden forests with stunning viewpoints. The campground is closed in winter, but you can park at the entrance and walk in for a peaceful, all-season route.
What to Wear & Pack
- Dress in layers like you would for skating or skiing. Layers keep you warm and can be removed if you heat up. Check out Aurora Quest Outdoor Sports Gear or Nomads to get suited up!
- Waterproof pants are a must! Snow flicks up from your snowshoes, and without water-resistant gear, you’ll end up wet.
- Day pack essentials: Snacks, water, and maybe a thermos of hot chocolate.
Insider Tip: Snowshoeing is more tiring than walking! Start with an easy trail to gauge your group’s energy.
