The mermaid has captured the hearts—and tails—of Sylvan Lakers for decades.
A Symbol Woven Through Sylvan Lake
Mermaids appear throughout Sylvan Lake in art, seasonal décor, and even in names.
From Swimming Regattas to Town Symbol
Swimming regattas have been part of Sylvan Lake’s history since 1907, gaining national attention in 1930 with the first one-mile swim during the Provincial Wriggly Swim competition. By the 1950s, organizers sought a symbol for the event, and chose the mermaid.
Soon after, Town Council adopted it as Sylvan Lake’s official symbol, cementing its place in local culture.
Mermaids in Sylvan Lake Life
Over the years, the icon has appeared in many beloved traditions:
- Miss Mermaid Paddle Cruise – Once sailed the lake, offering scenic views and dinner cruises.
- Mermaid Ball – An annual Chamber of Commerce event celebrating local businesses.
The Fountain That Holds the Legacy
Today, the life-size mermaid fountain titled Birth, unveiled during 1913 Days in 2000, continues the legacy. You’ll find it across from the Legion on 50 Avenue between 50 Street and 49 Street.
Mermaids aren’t just a symbol – they’re a story woven into Sylvan Lake’s identity. Next time you visit, take a moment to spot these legendary figures around town.
