“The dream is to help people make memories. We wanted to open an all-ages space where people can get creative indoors, year-round,” says owner Sean McIntyre. “Sylvan Lake is known for the beach—and we love it—but there are only so many perfect beach days. We wanted to give people something fun to do indoors.”
A Family-Run Studio with Heart
Next of Kiln is a family-run pottery painting studio in Sylvan Lake designed for creativity and connection. Sean, his wife, and their kids all pitch in, creating a warm, welcoming environment for visitors. As long-time residents, the McIntyres wanted to add something special to the town’s family-friendly entertainment options.
“We hope it feels inviting and home-like. When you walk in, you’re greeted with a smile. People are always surprised by the variety of things they can do here,” McIntyre shares. “It’s really about making memories.”

Guests can choose from a wide selection of ready-to-paint pottery pieces – everything from mugs and plates to unique keepsakes. After painting, each piece is kiln-fired to a durable, glossy finish, transforming your creation into functional dishware, personalized gifts, or treasured souvenirs.
- Step 1: Pick your piece and paint with guidance from friendly staff.
- Step 2: Leave it to be fired in the on-site kiln.
- Step 3: Pick up your masterpiece in seven days or have it shipped to your door.
“About 80% of people say, ‘I’m not an artist.’ But you don’t have to be—we guide you through every step,” McIntyre says. “The best part is when they come back and see their finished piece. They’re amazed at what they created.”
The Science Behind the Art
Each piece spends 24 hours in the kiln at temperatures over 1800°C. “They go in matte and chalky and come out glossy and beautiful,” McIntyre explains. “It’s always a surprise when we open the kiln and see the transformation.”
